The Colonica once housed no less than 5 families plus a small grocery shop for the inhabitants of Calcina Alta. In the 1500s the Torre Colombara was built on the site of what was probably an ancient Etruscan tomb, and the stables were then added at ground level for the “vaccine e la somara” (cattle and donkey), on top of which was built a kitchen in typical Umbrian style, with a large fireplace, and which led directly to the bedroom. Building work continued until as late as the 1900s, adding further stables, wine cellars, storage, bedrooms and kitchens.
This smallholding is closed in antique style, the stone walls seemingly rising from the depths of the valley to keep watch over the house and its garden. An external portico offers shade and welcome respite from the heat of August, while two beautiful pergole and a further portico offer direct access from the appartments to the garden.
